Train fans and history buffs alike will enjoy a visit to either branch (or both!) of the Railroad Museum of Long Island, located in Greenport and Riverhead, NY.
It’s natural that Greenport host a branch of the Railroad Museum of Long Island as Greenport is the reason the Long Island Railroad was built in the first place! While having a railroad on Long Island would have happened sooner or later, early Greenport’s buzz of commerce made the inevitability that much more of a going concern.
History comes to life with three masts and a crows nest at Long Island’s Greenport Village this year with a 4th of July visit from the Tall Ships of America 2015!
Greenport village has a long and storied history, having first been settled in the 1600’s to become a major whaling and shipbuilding port. Then came the fishing and huge oyster industries which brought the railroad and, consequently, over-fishing. Greenport, like many ports, made changes to adapt and improve itself, becoming a major destination for thousands of visitors throughout the year.
Thus, it should come as no surprise that Greenport would have the honor of playing host to the Tall Ships of America 2015 – and not on just any date but on Independence Day, July 4th, 2015!
Named “one of America’s prettiest towns” by Forbes magazine in 2011, Greenport is a vibrant and historic village on Long Island’s North Fork. A perfect mix of unpretentious Americana and modern culture, one can find old-school, seafood shacks abutting fine restaurants and quiet, summer cottages sharing the view with upscale shops. Greenport art galleries reflect this wonderful, cultural dichotomy with their charm and variety – come and discover them!
The 2nd annual Great Music Sunday concert brings the Au Courant Quartet, four Juilliard musicians, to Greenport on Sunday, March 22, 2015!
The mission of the Great Music Sunday series, which began in 2014, is to introduce audiences to up-and-coming musical professionals, promote musical expression, and to inspire local, musical youth to greater performance heights – and the inclusion of the Au Courant Quartet for the second year goes a long way towards continuing to fulfill that goal.
The Au Courant Quartet plans to present Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F Major and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in E minor to the Great Music Sunday concert audience; two of the most popular selections from the chamber music repertoire.
After the performance, members of the Au Courant Quartet will engage the audience in a question and answer session, giving audience members an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the performers as musicians and how music has influenced their lives.
Four accomplished alumni of New York city’s famous Juilliard School, the Au Courant Quartet is made up of Kobi Malkin on violin, Sofia Nowik on cello, Daniel Kim on viola, and Matous Michal also on violin. Kobi Malkin, violinist from Israel, has received the prestigious Ilona Kornhauser prize and is a fellow in Ensemble ACJW, a joint program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School and the Weill Music Institute.
Cellist Sofia Nowik teaches cello through a nonprofit music-mentoring program in New York City called Opportunity Music and is also on the faculty at the Great Neck Music Conservatory. Daniel Kim, violist, has received an impressive number of honors and awards, including the the Neale-Silva Young Artist Competition, Tanglewood Music Center Maurice Schwartz Prize, the UW-Madison concerto competition, the Aspen Festival Orchestral String Fellowship, the UW School of Music Alumni Association scholarship, and the Kato Perlman scholarship. He was on the faculty at the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute, and has led orchestra sectionals for the Juilliard Pre-College Division.
Czech violinist Matous Michal is considered one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Recipient of numerous awards and prizes as a performer and interpreter of the chamber genre, Matous regularly appearing as a soloist with major orchestras and conductors, including James Levine and Kurt Masur.

We’ve talked an awful lot about North Fork wineries recently, so I felt it was time to shift the focus on a similar subject: Long Island craft breweries. Did you know there are nearly 30 breweries or brewpubs on Long Island, including our very own Greenport Harbor Brewing?
Greenport Harbor Brewing has been brewing craft beer on Long Island’s North Fork since July of 2009. Initially producing a modest 3,000 barrels of beer a year, Greenport Harbor Brewing’s popularity outstripped its production capacity.
