See the Schooner America In Greenport!

May 14, 2016 by Wilfred Joseph

The Schooner America In GreenportDon’t miss the schooner America in Greenport this summer – June 8th through the 10th, 2016 – as this beautiful tall ship, a replica of the schooner responsible for America’s Cup tradition, visits ports along the East Coast!
The original America was a 19th-century racing yacht made famous by besting all her British competitors during the August 22nd, 1851, One Hundred Sovereign Cup regatta around the Isle of Wight. America, representing the New York Yacht Club, passed the Royal Yacht in first position to win the 53 mile race by 18 minutes.
The trophy – the One Hundred Sovereign Cup – was returned to the US and donated to the New York Yacht Club under the provision that it remain “a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between nations,” which we now know as the America’s Cup, named after the winning schooner America.
The original America schooner had an interesting life after that: pleasure craft, blockade runner during the Civil War, US Navy training ship, then back to pleasure craft that was eventually scrapped and burned in 1945.
While there are three replicas of the 139 foot long, racing yacht America, only one tours under that name as an official licensed partner for the America’s Cup Tour.
Operated by Captain Troy Sears, the current schooner America is on tour of the US East Coast, sailing from the Gulf of Mexico up the Eastern Seaboard into Maine, before tacking south through the Caribbean and on to Bermuda in 2017 – all to generate excitement for the 35th sailing of the America’s Cup.
You’ll be able to see the schooner America in Greenport Harbor June 8th through the 10th. There is also a free opportunity to hear Captain Troy Sears and the crew of America talk about the history of the ship and the America’s Cup Race on Thursday, June 9th, 7pm to 9pm, at Greenport’s East End Seaport Museum
