Au Courant QuartetThe 2nd annual Great Music Sunday concert brings the Au Courant Quartet, four Juilliard musicians, to Greenport on Sunday, March 22, 2015!
The mission of the Great Music Sunday series, which began in 2014, is to introduce audiences to up-and-coming musical professionals, promote musical expression, and to inspire local, musical youth to greater performance heights – and the inclusion of the Au Courant Quartet for the second year goes a long way towards continuing to fulfill that goal.
The Au Courant Quartet plans to present Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 in F Major and Mendelssohn’s String Quartet No. 2 in E minor to the Great Music Sunday concert audience; two of the most popular selections from the chamber music repertoire.
After the performance, members of the Au Courant Quartet will engage the audience in a question and answer session, giving audience members an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the performers as musicians and how music has influenced their lives.
Four accomplished alumni of New York city’s famous Juilliard School, the Au Courant Quartet is made up of Kobi Malkin on violin, Sofia Nowik on cello, Daniel Kim on viola, and Matous Michal also on violin.
Kobi Malkin, violinist from Israel, has received the prestigious Ilona Kornhauser prize and is a fellow in Ensemble ACJW, a joint program of Carnegie Hall, the Juilliard School and the Weill Music Institute.
Cellist Sofia Nowik teaches cello through a nonprofit music-mentoring program in New York City called Opportunity Music and is also on the faculty at the Great Neck Music Conservatory.
Daniel Kim, violist, has received an impressive number of honors and awards, including the the Neale-Silva Young Artist Competition, Tanglewood Music Center Maurice Schwartz Prize, the UW-Madison concerto competition, the Aspen Festival Orchestral String Fellowship, the UW School of Music Alumni Association scholarship, and the Kato Perlman scholarship. He was on the faculty at the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute, and has led orchestra sectionals for the Juilliard Pre-College Division.
Czech violinist Matous Michal is considered one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Recipient of numerous awards and prizes as a performer and interpreter of the chamber genre, Matous regularly appearing as a soloist with major orchestras and conductors, including James Levine and Kurt Masur.
