2016 Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair
The 2016 Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair – May 14th and 15th, 12pm to 4pm at the Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, NY – is an annual festival celebrating the diversity of Long Island’s fiber arts with workshops, demonstrations, vendors, and more!
The Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair is a wonderful opportunity to discover local artisans and unique gifts as well as how they craft their creations. Whether you’re a casual fan of fiber arts or a craftsperson in your own right, you will not want to miss these two fun-filled days of exhibitions, sales, demonstrations, and hands-on learning.
At the 2016 Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair you’ll be able to see not just finished fiber products but the entire process, from harvesting the materials to preparing them for use. See where your yarn comes from at the Animal Displays with sheep, llamas, alpacas, angora rabbits, and more animals that provide the fleece and fiber needed to make fiber goods.
You’ll be fascinated watching trained Border Collies skillfully maneuvering a flock of sheep across the pasture at the Sheep Herding demonstration. The collies are smart but wait ’til you see the fancy footwork employed by llamas going through the Llama Obstacle Course, courtesy of The Long Island Livestock Company Youth Showteam!
Sheep and Llama Shearing demonstrations are part of the fair, as well. See how fiber is harvested by an expert shearer. Once you have your fiber, Carding and Spinning is next. See raw fibers cleaned and prepared for spinning, then watch as spinners turn fiber into yarn with their spinning wheels.
You’ll also see demonstrations on Dyeing, Knitting, Needle Felting, Rug-Hooking, Weaving, Quilting and more. You’ll also have the chance to meet and learn more about the local and regional guilds that keep these traditional arts alive!
Not just animal fibers, you can also learn the ancient and fascinating discipline of Basket Weaving at the the Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair. Discover how to weave plant fibers into baskets and other functional objects.
Held at picturesque Hallockville Museum Farm in Riverhead, NY, you’ll marvel at the historic campus, with buildings dating back to 1765 and plenty of places to relax and enjoy a picnic lunch of food purchased from Long Island Fleece and Fiber Fair vendors.
