Take a historic Greenport Walking Tour!Go back in history at Long Island’s Greenport Village with a fun and fascinating self-directed Greenport Walking Tour!
Now a pleasant and popular tourist destination in North Fork winery country, the history of Greenport Village is long and storied. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin both toured Greenport, and the great American poet Walt Whitman called the village home for a while – there are even rumors he taught at the high school for a semester.
Initially settled in 1682, Greenport Village has had a number of different names over the years, including Winter Harbor, Stirling, and Green Hill. The only incorporated community in the Long Island town of Southold, the name Greenport was officially adopted at a public meeting in 1831.
Due to its deep, protected harbor, Greenport Village has spent much of its life as a major port on the North Fork for both whaling and shipbuilding. By the mid 1800’s, the fishing industry in Greenport was employing thousands of people and, in 1844 the Long Island Railroad arrived with Greenport as the North Fork’s Eastern Terminal Station.
Greenport’s focus turned towards oystering during the first half of the 20th century. Over a dozen oyster processing plants were operating in town at the industry’s peak. Since those days, Greenport Village has turned its attention towards tourism, developing into a town Forbes magazine named in 2011 as one of the prettiest towns in the United States.
With a total area of only 1.2 square miles, a self-directed, historic Greenport walking tour is a great way to get to learn even more about this North Fork village’s rich history. You’ll stroll at your own pace through history with a tour of over 40 buildings from the late to early 1800’s and including attractions like the village’s first official Jail House (1910) and the antique carousel (1920) installed in Mitchell Park.
