Glory is a 1990 reproduction of a 30 foot Fantail launch, a style of craft popularized during the late 1800’s as advances in steam, gasoline, naptha, and electric-power allowed for the creation of small power boats. Originally built by the ELCO company, Fantail launches were quite popular with both the public and luminaries of the time like J.P. Morgan, and the Tsar of Russia.
Greenport’s Glory was converted to solar power in 2009, with solar cells on the roof at the dock charging Glory’s batteries and effectively eliminating the power boat’s carbon footprint. Glory is the only boat you can tour Peconic Bay Harbor in that produces zero emissions – in fact, it’s the only environmentally-friendly tour boat operating in New York state, period!
This environmentally-friendly approach to powering the boat has some obvious long-term pluses – but don’t forget the short-term ones, either: a small, electric ship like Glory produces little noise and virtually no fumes, meaning that touring onboard her is similar to gliding around in a quiet canoe – except that there’s room for you and 13 of your friends on Glory!
