Here we are. It is hard as it may be to believe that summer is almost over don't fret, though; that only means it's almost time for The Greenport Maritime Festival 2022. The 33rd annual return of this popular, Long Island North Fork event is scheduled for September 24th and 25th, 2022, in Greenport Village. The East End Maritime Festival is an annual tradition here on Long Island's North Fork. The weekend-long celebration of local maritime heritage is by the East End Seaport Museum. The highlight of the weekend is the Tall Ship Amistad that will be in the port.

The Tall Ship Amistad - September 24th and 25th
The Amistad that will be in Greenport is a replica of the original ship built and launched in 2000 at the Mystic Seaport Museum Shipyard. the Amistad had a very significant contribution to the fight for freedom of African Slaaves in America.
In 1839, Mende (the people of Sierra Leone) captives from Sierra Leone took control of the ship transporting them to slavery, the Amistad. Unable to navigate back to Africa, the ship was captured and towed into the port of New London in Connecticut. The Mende were faced with slavery or execution, and their cause was taken up by many residents throughout Connecticut.
U.S. Circuit and District courts ruled in favor of the Mende. This case was then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and in 1841 this court agreed with the lower court decisions and the Mende captives were ordered freed.

Folks come from all around Long Island area to attend the festivities, with proceeds going towards the East End Seaport Museum. In fact, the entire weekend serves to help fund the important works that the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation has planned for the next year. Other highlights for this year's Maritime Festival include the popular Opening Day Parade, Live Music, The Merry Merfolk, Food, Beer, Wine and More. Another big draw will be the Ice and Classic Boat Exhibit. Beautiful, hand-crafted, vintage and modern wooden boats will be on display along with East End boat builders and restoration experts demonstrating their expertise and skills.
There will be a special festival tour of the Bug Light Lighthouse
