Kontokosta Winery opened its tasting room doors to the public in summer of 2013 but has been producing wines since 2006. The 62-acre property overlooks Long Island Sound. The winery shares this enviable view with visitors who stop by for a taste and a nosh or maybe a bottle or two.
The spacious, 9,000 square foot tasting room is housed in a modern industrial version of a 19th century, New England barn. A gray, wood exterior belies the exposed steel beams and sparse but sleek details inside. The winery is wind-powered and used 90 percent recycled-content steel for their building.
A glossy black grand piano near the entry and copper-topped tables further the feel of stylish utility. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide a view that almost puts their wine in second place for reasons to visit.
Almost but not quite.
Kontokosta was out of the gate in 2013 with a sizable portfolio of wines, including some very impressive reds. The trend has continued. Kontokosta Winery varietals include Riesling, sauvignon blanc, Viognier, cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and Syrah. The vineyard produces up to 5,000 cases a year.
The winery has received an impressive number of awards for their wines over the years. At the 2016 New York Wine & Food Classic, they received 8 separate awards, including 2 bronze, 3 silver, 2 Double Gold, and a Best Of Class. These latter three were for Kontokosta’s 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon and their 2013 Cabernet Franc, respectively.
