Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of summer. New Yorkers tend to do one of two things over those three days: they stay home, clean, and wish they were someplace else, or they head to Long Island.

Our Long Island Bed and Breakfast is located in East Marion, near the very tip of the North Fork. The historic seaport of Greenport is just down the road. There is plenty to do here, and plenty of places to do nothing at all.

See the Tall Ships in Greenport over Memorial Day Weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend Events in the North Fork:

Tall Ships in the Village of Greenport. The ships are scheduled to arrive on Friday and Saturday. Tours of the ships will be offered all day Sunday and Monday. Vendors will have booths set up along Front Street, which will be closed to traffic. It is going to be a festive occasion.

Live Music at Clovis Point Winery. Clovis Point Winery is about 30 minutes from our NY Bed and Breakfast. The Earthones will play folk rock on Saturday from 2-5 p.m., and Small Island will play classic rock on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. Is there anything better than sipping wine in a beautiful setting, with live music setting the mood? We think not!

Live Music at Duck Walk Vineyards. Enjoy fine fine and music by Bob Carney from 1-5 p.m., Saturday.

Live Music at Martha Clara Vineyards. Playn & Simple plays from 2-5 p.m. on Saturdy; the NY Minute Band plays Sunday from 2-5 p.m; and Buttered Soul plays on Memorial Day from 2-5 p.m. A few hours listening to music at this beautiful vineyard is the perfect way to wrap up the weekend.

The Orient Point Lighouse, at the tip of the North Fork.

Walk down the street from our NY Bed and Breakfast to the Dam Pond Maritime Reserve, where trails lead through salt marshes and young hardwood forests to beaches. Rent a boat in Greenport and explore the coastline of Shelter Island Sound. Drive or cycle to the tip of the North Fork and walk the beaches of Orient Point. Slow down, relax, and enjoy every moment of Memorial Day Weekend.

The Tall Ships 2012 are coming to Greenport on the North Fork of Long Island over Memorial Day Weekend.

This is an extraordinary occasion–a chance to see some of the most glorious ships in the world under sail. The ships will arrive on Friday, May 25th and depart on Tuesday, May 29. While they’re docked in the Village of Greenport, visitors are invited to step on board and speak with members of the crew.

It’s magnificent to simply see the ships. Being able to tour them is, as they say, icing on the cake.

We’re looking forward to Memorial Day Weekend at our North Fork Long Island Bed and Breakfast, which is about five minutes from the Village of Greenport. You can bike to Greenport from Arbor View House in about fifteen minutes; that’s a good option during busy times like Memorial Day Weekend with the Tall Ships in town.

There will be vendors in town and Front Street will be closed each day until 6 pm.

Come see the Pride of Baltimore II, a reproduction 1812-era topsail schooner and the Goodwill Ambassador of the State of Maryland.

The Pride of Baltimore II.

Come see the Picton Castle, a three-masted, square rigger tall ship based in Nova Scotia.

Come see the H.M.S. Bounty, a movie-star of a ship and a relic of the famous ship that was mutinied off the coast of Tahiti in 1789.

Come to the North Fork of Long Island to see the Tall Ships over Memorial Day Weekend. Stay at our Bed and Breakfast near Greenport while you’re here. Guests will receive 4 tickets (per couple) to Tall Ship events.

It’s easy to understand why so many people plan romantic getaways on Long Island. There is something inherently romantic about the place, especially the North Fork.

Stroll hand in hand along the shores of nearby Marion Lake.

The water embraces us on three sides, filling the air with that distinctive, salty fragrance. The rhythmic sound of lapping waves is never far from the ears. There are few people here–enough to justify excellent restaurants and wineries, but not so many as to make it feel crowded. There are miles of sandy beaches to walk. You can see the stars at night.

When was the last time you devoted a weekend to romance? When was the last time you went away with your one and only? Was it last fall? Last summer? Isn’t it time you had a romantic getaway at our Long Island NY Bed and Breakfast?

Linger over a late dinner in nearby Greenport, and sleep in the following morning. When you awake, make your way downstairs to a romantic, candlelit, four-course breakfast. Pamper yourself with spa services. Hire a car to transport you to several of the award-winning wineries close to our inn. Walk hand in hand along the beach. Go for a nice, long bike ride.

Valentine’s Day and the Presidents’ Day long weekend both fall in February, making it as good a month as any for a romantic getaway on Long Island. Take advantage of our Lovers’ Magic Romantic Getaway Special, and treat your sweetie right. The special includes fresh flowers, a bottle of North Fork Champagne, cheese, crackers, fruit, and rich chocolate truffles. You’ll be treated to a romantic Aromatherapy bath and individual or couples’ massages. We’ll also provide a coupon for dinner at either The Frisky Oyster or Noah’s, and a discount on a wine tasting tour.

Bring your sweetie here to pop the question. Come here to celebrate an anniversary. Plan a few days at our Long Island Bed and Breakfast with the goal of visiting as many North Fork Wineries as you can. Or simply come to explore the North Fork of Long Island together, two people in love.

Our New York Bed and Breakfast is located on the North Fork of Long Island. We’re close to the glitter and opulence of the Hamptons, but the mood is more down to earth here. The towns are small and unpretentious. There are more fruit stands than bars along the roads, and more antique shops than high-end boutiques. It’s bucolic here, and we like it that way.

Guests come to our Long Island, NY Bed and Breakfast to get away from the noise and bustle of the city. They come here for fresh air, windswept beaches, and small town charm. It’s impossible not to feel reinvigorated and rejuvenated after a few days here.

Our inn sits near the tip of the North Fork of Long Island. We’re surrounded by water and beaches, and the beaches are reminiscent of Mediterranean beaches. The water is clear, the sand smooth, and the surf gentle. Even in the wintertime, there is no better place to watch the sunset than from one of the nearby beaches.

When guests have had their daily fill of beach walking, many enjoy exploring the Village of Greenport, which is just down the road from our inn. At this time of year, visitors find inspiration in the many interesting shops located in that quaint, historic town. Several antique stores feature furniture, fine arts, folk art, hand crafted stained glass, nostalgic toys, and other fun items. A number of jewelry stores feature hand made originals as well as big name jewelry, and two outstanding stores deal in wine and spirits.

Rediscover your inner child; relax on Long Island beaches.

Indeed, wine tasting is a favorite activity out here. In the last couple decades, many of the farms on the North Fork of Long Island have been replaced by small wineries; and more than 2 dozen wineries are close to our Long Island, New York Bed and Breakfast. Northfork Wine Tours operates out of Greenport; they’ll collect you at our inn in the morning, whisk you away for 8 hours of wine tasting at various North Fork Long Island wineries, and return you here safely in the evening.

Come discover the North Fork of Long Island. Plan to spend a few days at our New York Bed and Breakfast as soon as you can.

The fourth annual North Fork Foodie Tour will be happening on Long Island’s North Fork on Sunday, September 12 from 10 A.M. until 4 P.M. The North Fork Foodie Tour is sponsored by the North Fork Reform Synagogue and offers access to culinary experiences which are not usually available to the public. The tour is self guided, but tickets must be purchased in advance. There are more than a dozen venues to visit and no matter where you choose to start the tour, you will receive a map and detailed instructions for planning your day.

Children are always welcomed at the Museum and during the month of August, there are two scheduled readings. On Wednesday, August 11th, list to stories about lighthouses, view photos of lighthouses, and children can make a replica to take. Wednesday, August 18th gather around to hear tales of pirates and participate in making your very own treasure map to take home. This is a great way to learn about history and have fun along the way. Of course, add a special visit to the Village Blacksmith Shop on the weekends and see a real blacksmith at work.

The Annual Maritime Festival will be held on September 24th thru 26th. This is a special opportunity for locals and visitors to the Greenport area to learn about the East End’s Maritime heritage and contribute towards its preservation. The Festival is organized by volunteers and the East End Seaport Museum & Marine Foundation. The Village of Greenport will be packed with a variety of craft and food vendors, local merchants will have exciting displays, and guests can enjoy the array of galleries, antique stores, and restaurants.

A romantic getaway to Long Island would not be complete without some time spend on the waters of Long Island Sound. There is an abundance of ways to enjoy the sites, but one company seems to offer it all. The Peconic Star offers a variety of lighthouse tours, excursions, fireworks cruises, and sightseeing cruises. So take your pick!

It always seems that guests’ favorites are the lighthouse tours and The Peconic Star makes trips to all eleven lighthouses in the Southold area. This includes Horton Point Lighthouse, Bug Light, Plum Island Lighthouse, Latimer Lighthouse, Race Rock Lighthouse, Little Gull Lighthouse, Cedar Island Lighthouse, Orient Point Lighthouse, North Dumpling Lighthouse, South East Lighthouse, and Block Island North Lighthouse.

Orient Long Beach Bar Light “Bug Light” is a lighthouse off Orient, New York. It is interesting because it was originally a screwpile lighthouse that was later converted to a concrete caisson foundation. This is how it received its nickname “Bug Light” as there were no other such lighthouses in the vicinity.

Race Rock Light is a lighthouse on Race Rock Reef, southwest of Fishers Island. The reef is a dangerous set of rocks off the coast of Fishers Island on Long Island Sound and was the site of many shipwrecks. It was built between 1871 and 1878 and is an excellent example of 19th century engineering and design. The Coast Guard automated the light in 1978 and it is still operational.

Enjoy visiting all of the lighthouses during your stay at the Arbor View House Bed and Breakfast!

Mashomack Preserve is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. The preserve contains 2,039 acres, which is about 1/3 of the island. Among the riches to be found are tidal creeks, oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes. The preserve is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic” and is edged in white by 10 miles of coastline. Mashomack Preserve is open 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., March through September, and 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. October through February.

For those seeking birds, you will not be disappointed. Many birds are year around residents of Shelter Island and the list is long. It includes Cedar Waxwing, Blue Jay, Black-capped Chickadee, American Goldfinch, Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove, American Robin, House Finch, Tufted Titmouse, White-breasted Nuthatch, Downy Woodpecker, Hairy Woodpecker, and Carolina Wren. Migrating birds throughout the Spring and Fall include Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Purple Finch, Indigo Bunting, Canada Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Palm Warble, Black-throated Green Warbler, and others. Lastly, there are the Summer visitors. They can be a mixed variety but Scarlet Tanager, Baltimore Oriole, Common Yellowthroat, Eastern Phoebe, Ruby-throated Hummingbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Great-crested Flycatcher, Black-and-white Warbler, Piping Plover, Least Tern, and Osprey. I think that covers the birds, but let us know if we missed any!
